It is the 23rd century. Captain Spock is programming a quantum computer in his laboratory, with complete understanding and precision of what the device is capable of. However, one cannot help but wonder how the creators of the original Star Trek series, in the year 1966, foresaw this fantastic technology over half a century ago. Nonetheless, it will soon be here, and blending quantum principles into computing has opened a plethora of opportunities for physicists and technology developers. What are the odds of this technology opening the window to cyber threats as well? "Very high, and it needs our attention immediately," says Andrew Cheung, president and CEO at 01 Communique, a cybersecurity firm that focuses on averting threats caused by black hat hackers.

In the wake of today's cyber requirements, encryption is predominantly based on the complexity of prime number factorization. With the encryption forming the bedrock of cybersecurity, computers today are incapable of reversing the factorization fast enough, making it hard to break. This capability, however, has led to the complacency of business leaders toward their firms' cybersecurity standpoint. At the same time, today's world is already getting a taste of quantum computers and its capability to break down semi-prime numbers that are huge (e.g., 500+ digits long). Tasks that may take over a hundred CPU years by a regular computer can be accomplished by the quantum computers in seconds or even milliseconds as quantum computers keep evolving. While this enunciates the latter's strengths, it poses as much of a problem as well—quantum computing can enable a system hack with minimal efforts.

The Cyber Security of the Future is Here

Having foreseen this catastrophic problem, 01 Communique's CTO and a team of crypto-scientists have developed a code-based cryptographic solution—IronCAP. It is a patent-pending quantum-safe cryptography solution, which is built on the roots of a technique that enables the construction of public-key cryptosystems to secure users against any adversary equipped with a quantum computer. In comparison to the conventional code-based cryptography, IronCAP not only improves the level of security but also makes it faster. When a specific data needs to be transmitted from one system to another, IronCAP code-based cryptography encodes and deliberately inserts error syndromes into the data that misguides a quantum computer to prevent any compromise of information. The destination system uses an error extraction technology, thereby revealing the data to the recipient. This ensures the safe and secure transfer of data within an organization. 01 Communique's cryptography system is designed to transform today's cybersecurity in a way that is safe against future attacks from the world of quantum computers.

With an improvement in the cryptographic process, making it even faster than the traditional encryption, IronCAP can be used to secure email/file encryption, blockchain, 5G/IoT, remote access/VPN, cloud storage, and many other verticals. By providing an IronCAP API for the blockchain implementer that is PKCS#11 compliant, Cheung advises his clients to integrate the solution from the genesis block. "Reconstructing the blockchain to make it quantum-safe after it has been put to use is very difficult. To simplify the process, we enable clients to encrypt the blocks from the beginning through our APIs," adds Cheung.

IronCAP allows all blockchain vendors, including cryptocurrencies, to digitally sign their new blocks to ensure security. Clients can also benefit from the same implementers for other verticals such as 5G/IoT, AI, cloud storage, VPN, and more.

Pioneering Email Encryption

In addition, 01 Communique has designed an email encryption solution, IronCAP X. It utilizes the IronCAP API as the underlying cryptographic system to ensure safety against cyber-attacks from both the classical world of computers as well as against future attacks from quantum computers. Clients can simply integrate IronCAP X with their everyday email clients such as Outlook and Gmail to ensure zero learning curve. "As the world's first end-to-end quantum-safe email/file encryption and digital signing system, IronCAP X provides an option to compose encrypted emails to secure all data sent and received via emails," says Cheung. The system enables clients to digitally sign emails to ensure authenticity to recipients. Clients can also encrypt their sensitive files such as personal finances to safeguard against cyber-attack using IronCAP X. Unlike other secure email systems that store emails with the condition for recipients to read from their servers, IronCAP X is direct end-to-end encryption with no central storage point, which can be vulnerable to a cyber attack.

With a team that has a collective experience of over 40 years in crypto science and code-based cryptography, 01 Communique has foreseen threats from the quantum sector and is helping clients stay prepared for it. Serving companies from different verticals, the firm offers an encryption library that can be used to integrate IronCAP API commercially. IronCAP X is set to make a full-scale launch in the market later this year. “We want to provide more solutions to avert cyber-attacks using quantum computers, thereby making it possible to spread the wings of post-quantum cryptography across different industries,” adds Cheung. Although that day, when a quantum computer is able to crack an RSA encryption is not here yet, it is not too far either, and 01 Communique is prepared with its fortress. Most importantly, there is no time to wait because a lot of data has a shelf life of several years. Bad actors can "obtain and wait" until after the Q-Day to compromise the data. Plus much of the infrastructure today such as blockchains cannot be easily converted to quantum-safe. If a blockchain using non-quantum-safe cryptography is in operation, the task to reconstruct all the blocks to quantum-safe standards is really tough. IronCAP is designed to be secured against both the world of classical computers as well as the post-quantum world of computing.
